Artistic Director of the Meyerhold Center
Culture in our city has gone beyond government institutions and it is involved in the change of the urban environment. Street festivals, performances, exhibitions, classical music concerts in parks and squares - all of this is extremely important. Citizens deprived of culture due to variety of life circumstances (material, educational, etc.) begin to be involved in the culture.
The Meyerhold Center is involved in this movement of culture towards a society: our performances now regularly take part in park festivals. We have created the country's first "Workshop of storytelling" and several theater performances that people can see in Moscow parks for free.
The second important tendency in the Moscow culture - a generational change in cultural institutions. Acknowledged masters of the older generation, unfortunately, leave the stage. Old Soviet mechanisms of generations’ change have been violated and the new ones have not appeared. Nevertheless, in the last three years authorities have realized a necessity to create such a mechanism. The "School of Theatre leader" has become a part of this mechanism. It’s an educational program, created on behalf of the Cultural Department at our center, in which young directors and producers prepare for professional careers in the national theater. Our graduates make projects with vulnerable social groups. Earlier this work was done mostly by independent groups and theaters, but now national theaters become more and more involved in this process.
In short, today an artist faces the people and undertakes the work in a society that no one except the artist will be able to do. The authorities should support these artists thereby contributing to the humanization of society, because culture and art can change quality of our life making it spiritually richer and brighter. Looking into the future today I can see that this beautiful motto - "Live. Work. Create"- has become a reality.
